Widespread Vandalism and Neglect in IST Classrooms

It’s a difficult challenge to find a computer in “okay” condition in any of the IST classrooms. I am not necessarily suggesting a fleet upgrade — although it does seem necessary over this summer — but rather some better policies on protecting all the cool equipment we have available in the IST Building.

It’s disappointing to see an iMac screen cracked in the corner because some weirdo got frustrated with the machine or a mouse missing because a poor asshole snatched it out of the building. Additionally, what ever happened to the “No Food or Drinks in the Computer Lab” policy? I really don’t want to have to bring clorox wipes with me to wipe down all that nasty bullshit covering the keyboards.

What would the companies that donated the funds to purchase the nice hardware think if they could see how the IST students were treating it?

If you have any photos (or if you have a digicam on hand), please do share photos of misused equipment with us so we can show the damage. Email them to editor@istbuilding.com.

  1. I’ve heard somewhere that IST upgrades their computers every three years , but I don’t exactly know if this is true.

  2. I’m going to agree with Daehee on this. The rest of the building is in relatively good condition and looks great (especially after they cleaned the whole thing before the open house). The labs need to be taken better care of by the students so future students can enjoy the facilities.

  3. The sticky keyboards give the IST building character.

I think you’re the first person who actually likes the no food or drink rule… oh and I eat in the labs on a regular basis - I don’t’ have time in my schedule to eat elsewhere. I don’t make a mess, but if you have a problem with it, I don’t mind wiping down the computer when I’m finished eating. The big issues with the rooms are all the germs people pass from coughing or sneezing on the machines, and the writing on the mouse pads is just stupid. I think the vandalism is from the use the labs get from non-IST classes.

  5. This is one of those issues that can be solved by placing signs on all the doors saying, “grow up kids”

@Tom Bierly: Also guilty of food in the classroom.

Agree they could fix that broken computer screen in the Mac lab. I can’t believe someone had the audacity to punch the screen.

  7. I agree as well, there should be better enforcement with this. However at the Berks campus I never really see this. But that is probably only because all the classroom labs are locked unless a teacher is in there and the only one that is open always has someone watching over it. However it’s sad to see that some people have so little respect for their peers that they vandalize equipment that everyone must share.
