PSU Forums Guerilla Marketing Tactics
PSU FORUMS . COM is scribbled all over the whiteboard facing out of the glass networking lab by the Cybertorium. I first noticed PSU Forums back in May from the numerous flyers posted in each of the IST classrooms. I liked the concept but doubted that it would catch on with the Penn State community. It still hasn’t.
The problem is that Penn State itself is not niched enough to make a forum out of it. The categories in PSU Forums range from THON to Rate My Professor to branch campuses. This is a ridiculous scatter plot of a little bit of everything. The focus should be narrowed further to a topic like football, gaming or even something like ultimate frisbee. For instance, Juicy Campus is a perfect brooding ground for PSU’s sorority girls while the IST Building forum has a specific purpose as a micro community for IST students. Our own forum obviously lacks activity right now but we plan on promoting it next semester with the incoming freshmen.
Paul Rinaldi (Sophomore, IST) started PSU Forums back in March 2008. I’m looking forward to the creative marketing stunts that Paul has in store for us next academic year. The forum currently boasts 188 registered members and 521 total posts.
