Techies’ Top 20 Apps and Websites
TechCrunch, a technology blog, recently released figures on the most used applications and websites by early adopters of technology based on data from Y-Combinator. RescueTime,a productivity application, documented the most used desktop applications and website applications from 30,000 users. Below is TechCrunch’s table of the top 20 used apps and websites. The percentages represent the amount of time spent using that particular application or site out of 475,190 hours, so we can assume that this is an accurate representation of usage in real-life.

This study makes several observations clear. At the time being, Outlook is still more popular than Gmail This study is also a great indicator of the ongoing battle between desktop applications and web applications. At least among the more tech savvy individuals, desktop apps still appear to be more prevalent. Web apps, however, have gained a lot of traction and made some headway.
One of the more interesting results of this study is the fact that about 5650 hours were dedicated to questing and dungeon raiding in the virtual worlds of Azeroth and the Outlands . World of Warcraft is the 20th most used application.
